Tall kitchen cabinets are most typically 84 or 96 inches tall. When we began the renovations we removed that cabinet above the fridge and installed it above the cabinets. Once installed over your base cabinets the top of your wall cabinets will be at 84 inches 90 inches or 96 inches respectively. I figured 12 cabinets would be perfect because we could fill in the remaining 6 of space with molding.
The standard height for upper cabinets has changed somewhat over the years. The set of cabinets that were originally over my fridge circled below measured 12 inches in height. Anyone shorter may need a step stool or the assistance of a taller family member to easily access upper shelves. With the standard upper cabinet 30 inches tall and 12 inches deep a 5 ft.

A 96 inch tall cabinet will run floor to ceiling in a standard 8 foot room while an 84 inch tall cabinet provides a foot of breathing room and can offer a uniform line with surrounding wall cabinets. This leaves 18 inches of space between your base cabinets and your wall cabinets after the countertops.
