Mask off the interiors with painter s tape for a clean finish and sand only the front surfaces and visible edges of the cabinet face frames.
Wipe your cabinets dry with paper towels or a clean cloth. Repeat the process until you ve removed the shellac from all your cabinets. Let the deglosser sit for a few minutes per the manufacturer s instructions. Use an abrasive pad to scrub the surface of the cabinets to remove the shellac.
If your repainting project is just a facelift for the cabinets you don t need to sand and paint the inside of the cabinets. After you ve removed the majority of the lacquer let your cabinets air dry for 6 12 hours. Apply paint to the cabinetry using the same technique. If your cabinets have raised panels paint these first and work out toward the edges of the doors leaving.
Use a small roller for larger surface areas and a brush to cut into corners and details starting from the back of the cabinets. Even if your cabinets are in near perfect condition you still have to sand them so the paint will stick. Wipe away any dust with a slightly damp cloth then let dry. For this project it took three coats to turn the cabinets from orange to white.
