Mounting Kitchen Cabinets

Finally mark the stud locations as you begin a how to install kitchen cabinets project.
Run 3 inch screws through the back of the cabinet into the plywood panel hitting the stud whenever possible making sure to run screw through the horizontal installation cleats in the back of the unit. With the cabinets on the floor align the face frame of the upper corner cabinet so it s flush with the frame of the neighboring cabinet. Draw a vertical line to line up the edge of the first cabinet to be installed. Install it so all the knobs on the cabinet are spaced evenly.
Drive 2 inch drywall screws through it and into every other stud. Use shims in the back to make it plumb if necessary. Make sure these are also just tight enough to hold the cabinets in place for now. Cut strips of straight 3 4 in x 1 1 2 in wood to fit the front and sides of each cabinet.
Finally mark the stud locations. Label the location of the kitchen wall cabinets and appliances on the wall. From that line and draw another line for the bottom of the upper cabinets. Provide a nailing surface for crown moulding by attaching solid wood mounting strips to the top edges of the cabinets.

Attach more cleats along the length of the line. Most drawer pulls are centered on the drawer fronts but if the cabinet you re working on has two or three drawers the same size and one larger one at the bottom install the bottom knob or pull higher than the center of that drawer front. Use clamps to hold the cabinets together and then drive screws into the back. Installing the cabinets step 1 for lowers.
Set a straight 1x3 cleat alongside and just beneath the layout line for the upper cabinets. Set the second cabinet into position and line up the faces so that they re even at the bottom and across the front. Label the location of the kitchen wall cabinets and appliances on the wall. Use one long strip for a row of cabinets the same depth then apply wood glue to each strip nail it in place and let dry.
