Sealing Underlayment Under Kitchen Cabinets

The use of particle board in kitchen and bathroom walls or floors should be avoided whenever possible.

After framing rough plumbing electrical sheetrock etc our gc put in the plywood subfloor then put down the hardwood floor then put down a sealer coat of poly under where all of the cabinets would go and then installed the cabinets. Staple the underlayment to the subfloor with staples spaced 48 inches apart. This piece should be at least 2 inches wide and about inch thicker than the total thickness of the flooring including any vapor barrier or cushion.

The price difference for us between doing under the cabinets and not was negligible. To tile up to the cabinets imo is to stop short of finishing the floor. The bottom edge at the front where it hangs over the cabinets is bare particle board. If you do use particle board in these areas seal it thoroughly and then lay tiles on the wall or paint it.

You can use caulk to fill gaps less than about 1 2 inch wide and you can fill wider gaps by stuffing them with steel wool and caulking over it. Remove the cabinets and screw a plywood filler piece to the subfloor about inch inside the line where it will be under the cabinets. For flooring a concrete board on top of the particle board provides added stability and protection from moisture. We tiled under the cabinets when we remodeled our kitchen.
