Round off any sharp edges of the finish.
Wet the wood if you don t want to use conditioner. Use a rag to work stain down into the pores of the wood. The wood grain is so open that in one coat you should be able to get the look you want. Finish up by sanding the cabinets again this time with 150 to 220 grit paper.
Make a final pass working in the grain of the wood. After sanding apply a wood conditioner. Cerused wood cabinets commonly thought of as lime washed. When you water pop wood you won t have to do multiple coats of stain either.
You will need to clean off and remove years worth of residue oils and grime in order to fully prepare the cabinet surface for stain. Yellow orange wood stain take the yellow orange hue inherent to many wood species up to the next level by staining the wood a vibrant mustard color like this one from minwax. Denatured alcohol mixed with water 50 50 mix on a fine grit sanding sponge will remove all oils grime and take the edge off the old finish to help you prepare the cabinets. Wipe off the sanding dust and apply the stain as you did for the color matching test.
